Going to see the Christmas Lighting is a tradition in the city and everyone typically goes there to not only enjoy the lights with family and share moments but also to take pictures and have some unforgettable memories. This year [2019], the epicentre of Christmas Lighting is located at Parque Norte where you will see a huge traditional Pesebre [Christmas Manger], aguinaldos [Christmas gifts], and a representation of novenas [typical Colombian carols] evoking Medellin´s Christmas season customs. As you walk around, you will also observe sheep, a small town portraying the village of the nativity scene, carpenters, churches and so on, and on the Parque Norte Lake, there are also ships, fishermen, and figures of The Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph, ducks, fishes and so on.

In another part of the city, this year the Mayor of Medellin has recently re-opened Parques del Río after 5 years which is a unique space to share with family while enjoying the Christmas Lighting, you can also eat and have a drink, listen to music, dance, ride a bicycle and so on. If you have kids and/or pets, this is a wonderful opportunity to bring them, there are spaces to play and have fun while you have a walk around. Kids can enjoy the children´s play area and/or observe the Lights on the Medellin river while you walk around it which are amazing. You can also have a picnic on the grass or take a rest at any of the benches surrounding the place.

While Parque Norte and Parques del Río are the main places to enjoy the Christmas Lighting and I highly recommend you to visit them, there are also some other alternatives you should consider, especially this year, such as the Lighting located at Avenida La Playa in town, Tranvía de Ayacucho, El Paseo Bolívar, and Avenida Las Palmas. Also, at some other municipalities of the Aburra Valley which are near to the city like Envigado and Sabaneta, you can get some beautiful lighting where you can enjoy the decoration and at the same time get to know other districts of Medellin´s Metropolitan Area.
